At Liverpool, us fans love our own local players. But of course we are always willing to adopt other players from all over the world. Scotland, particularly has given so much talent to Liverpool.
These are just some of our great players, past and present, in no particular order.
Gordon Hodgson
- Hodgson scored 17 hat tricks in the 1920s and 30s.
Ron Yeats
- the 'Colossus' Shankly called him. He would
tell journalists to come and walk around this 7ft
Scotsman who was in fact 6ft 2. Faithful to
Anfield he later became a talent scout.
Roger Hunt
- a great instinctive striker, Roger scored 286 goals for the club, 245 league goals.
He was also one of the great 11 who won the world cup in '66.
Alan Hansen
- another great Scotsman to grace
Anfield, he took part in winning three
European Cups
Kenny Dalgish
- 'Honest' John McKenna would have been proud of this one too, known as 'King Kenny'. An amazing goal scorer. He was the first to score 100 league goals for both England and Scotland. Just one of many records he broke and for this reason as well as his success as a manager for Liverpool he was voted the number one player who 'shook the kop.'
Ian Rush
- 'Rushie,' the little Welsh dragon took a
while to settle in at Anfield. Paisley
allegedly told him to be more selfish and
start scoring goals or he would have to let
him go. Once that goal came, others followed and they just didn't stop. He is still today Liverpool's leading goal scorer and my personal favourite.
John Barnes
- another of my favourites, John Barnes was a power-house of a man. His ability and his attacking partnership with Rushie was amazing and I still miss them today.
-Michael Owen burst onto the Anfield scene in 1997 as a replacement for injured Robbie Fowler and scored. Plenty of fire in his belly, he finished the season as joint top goal scorer in the Premier League and the goals just kept coming. By the end of 2002, Owen had helped Liverpool to become the first English team to win 5 trophies in one calendar year and he became the first English player in 20 years to win the European Footballer of the Year award.
Local Boys
- John Aldridge (Aldo) scored 78 goals for Liverpool. One of my favourite Aldo moments
though was his commentary in Istanbul
when we won the European Champions League Cup and he screamed like any other true fan.
- Steve McManaman (surely there's some Scottish blood in there) was 'the best mid-fielder in the world'. Pele himself told us. He created many of the goals scored for his team at a time when Liverpool were struggling.
-Robbie Fowler was an ardent Everton fan as a young boy until Liverpool scout, Jim Aspinall spotted him. He signed for the Liverpool Schoolboys aged 11 and turned professional on his 17th birthday. An honest, nice lad he was very popular with the fans.
-Jamie Carragher is one of my favourite players to grace Anfield, not just because he grew up near to where I did, but because of his personality and his professionalism. Originally a 'blue-nose' Jamie knows everything there is to know about Liverpool and its history. A very down-to-earth lad who knows what is important in life, he is not one for the superficial glitter and glamour that often goes with the game and his down-to-earth wife doesn't fall into the typical WAG category either. He is the best, most natural defender who has ever played for Liverpool.
-Steven Gerrard is for many one of Liverpool's finest, voted as the second most influential player in Liverpool's history. Plagued with injuries as a youngster his future was never certain but with committed manager, Houllier he overcame his problems and has never looked back. Probably the most complete player the world has seen, the only role he hasn't played in is goal-keeper. He has a number of honours to be proud of - including Liverpool's top scorer in the European Cup - and his determination and passion for the team makes him one of our favourites.
